Balancing Quality and Quantity in Streaming
Balancing Quality and Quantity in Streaming
As streamers, we often wrestle with the common "What if?" dilemma, a series of unsettling questions that can cast a shadow over our work. The uncertainties surrounding the success of a new game, viewership during a different stream time, or the potential pitfalls of a live stream can create significant hurdles. Whether you're on the brink of starting your streaming journey or contemplating changes to your existing content, succumbing to the "What if?" mindset can disrupt well-laid plans.
Through this unavoidable questioning, a variety of harmful habits are triggered. From coaxing friends to watch your initial streams to seeking hasty solutions for garnering followers and fixating on perfection before starting, the fear of negative outcomes associated with the "What if?" scenario is a powerful force. The fear of witnessing your efforts go to waste propels us into counterproductive patterns.
It is especially common among beginner streamers to obsess over stream statistics. The temptation to gauge the quality and overall success of your streams solely based on numerical data often leads to a shortsighted perspective. In instances where these metrics fall short over an extended period, it becomes a discouraging factor significant enough to prompt some streamers to quit streaming. In this entry, the focus is on explaining the risky nature of overemphasizing stream statistics.
Balancing Goals and Content Volume
A vlogger shared insights into the early stages of building a video game brand, recounting experiences of attending prominent events such as gaming expos and conventions. The challenge highlighted was the considerable investment of time and effort in meticulous event preparation, leading to a noticeable decline in content creation post-event. The blog post "Is your Streaming Success Hindered by Your Goals?" highlighted the potential pitfalls of fixating on the outcomes of grand plans, emphasizing the draining effect on progress beyond specific goals. A significant contributing factor to this post-event lethargy was an excessive focus on statistics, particularly metrics following content releases.
The same vlogger reflected on personal struggles during the early years, having gained access to coveted gaming events. Intense self-imposed pressure accompanied the release of videos, followed by an exhaustive effort to share content across platforms, monitor statistics, and engage with various communities. As a result, it became evident that equating the importance of a video with its view count was the wrong approach to brand-building on YouTube and Twitch.
In the phase of the blogger's career, a similar pattern emerged, but with a strategic shift towards content volume while working for a large company on an expansive scale. Rather than concentrating on creating a few high-quality videos, the focus shifted to producing a substantial volume of content. This involved streamlining processes, shortening videos, and accelerating production to prioritize quantity over singular excellence. The strategy aimed to maximize appeal by catering to specific niches through a diverse range of content. The blogger observed that concentrating on the sheer volume of content and adopting a mindset that focused on something other than individual post results played a crucial role in multiplying the brand's popularity. The approach of not overly worrying about each post's performance and prioritizing content proliferation significantly expanded the brand's reach.
Quality over Quantity Streaming
While the mantra "more is sometimes better" holds merit in the world of streaming, as you build your brand and refine your skills, prioritizing quality over quantity becomes essential. This outlook guides my approach to high-volume content creation across all my efforts. While it’s important not to be concerned about statistics, I encourage you to adopt a similar mindset. When starting a new streaming channel, initial video quality isn't everything. Often, the first dozen streams may slip under the radar. Building a brand isn't just about maximizing views per stream; it's about consistent, quality content to maintain viewer engagement. Increasing your streams can amplify your impact, but it's crucial to balance quantity with quality. Striking this balance ensures sustainable growth and viewer satisfaction.
Final Thoughts
Instead of fixating on individual stream outcomes or pre-emptively promoting every stream to boost views, focus on creating more content. To truly witness tangible results, both in your metrics and your streaming abilities, exercise patience with statistics while increasing your production. If you catch yourself overly concerned about the statistics of a single stream, you're likely not creating enough content. By employing this strategy effectively, you'll shift your focus from minor statistics to a broader perspective, revealing a larger-scale picture of success.
