Navigating Reality in Streaming

 Navigating Reality in Streaming

When creating our content, it’s easy to get caught up in the illusion that everything is under control. Whether we’ve put a lot of effort into planning and setting up our channel before going live or we’re cruising smoothly with our current routine, overconfidence can lead to trouble if we're not careful. Even the most meticulous plans and well-established habits can be disrupted. As in the classic scene from The Godfather, where Don Corleone says, “I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse,” it’s a reminder that unexpected challenges can emerge. So, when streaming, it’s wise to stay prepared for the unexpected and adapt as needed.

Prepare for Anything

Anyone who has used a public bathroom is familiar with the signs and instructions posted about proper sanitation. These signs often remind people to wash their hands and avoid touching surfaces unnecessarily. Failure to follow these guidelines can lead to health risks, including the spread of illnesses and infections.

Yet, despite these clear instructions and the emphasis on hygiene, some people still neglect these practices. Public bathrooms are often equipped with additional amenities like hand sanitizer stations and disposable seat covers, not just as a convenience but as a precaution. Even though these amenities might seem redundant, they are there to address the reality that not everyone will follow the guidelines perfectly.

This approach is similar to how I handle my streaming. No matter how well I plan or how smoothly everything seems to be going, unexpected issues can arise. I make sure to have backup plans, like preparing extra content or having technical solutions ready, to address potential problems. By anticipating these challenges and preparing for them, I can ensure my streams run smoothly and that my audience has a great experience, even if something doesn’t go as planned. Just as public restrooms provide extra measures to maintain hygiene, I incorporate strategies to handle any surprises during my streams.

Streaming with a Backup Plan

Even though I’m a strong advocate for using pre-stream checklists, setting clear chat rules, developing strong habits, and other forms of preparation, I never assume that these measures make my streams foolproof. I always try to have backup options ready in case my plans don’t go as expected.

One of the most reliable solutions when issues arise is having a “Be Right Back” screen. Being able to switch to a screen that hides your camera feed and gameplay gives you a moment to address any issues off-screen. Even for the worst problems, there are usually solutions. In "How to Become a Solution-Oriented Streamer," we shared a mental exercise for finding three different solutions to one of the most challenging issues a streamer can face: losing internet connectivity. It’s also important to stay mentally prepared for the worst and be mindful of your reactions. If something goes wrong while you’re live, it’s easy to panic due to the pressure and embarrassment. In "Stay Cool Under Pressure," we focused on maintaining your composure when unexpected issues arise.

What about when someone gets out of hand in your chat? While we have shared our favorite methods for moderating chat, establishing rules, and gauging viewer reactions, sometimes a viewer can’t be reasoned with. In those situations, it’s perfectly acceptable to time them out or even ban them. Once you’ve made it clear that their behavior is unacceptable, most of your audience will understand and appreciate your actions. Additional tools like clearing the chat or setting it to “followers only” mode can prevent more disruptive attacks, like follow bots or users creating new profiles to bypass restrictions. Typically, these disruptions fade away, and you can return to your usual stream flow.

Final Thoughts

The strategies I’ve shared have helped me plan for the realities of my streams. However, your streams are unique, and you will encounter your challenges. Take some time to consider what actions you can take if things don’t go as planned. Additionally, pay attention to any issues that arise, and use those experiences to inform your future contingency plans. By planning for reality, even the most difficult problems will feel more manageable.
